RESET® Waste

The RESET Waste Standard is a operating data standard for continuous waste monitoring.

RESET Waste is designed to prioritize on-going results with a focus on the operational phase of a built environment. RESET Waste requires waste generation data to be continuously gathered through IoT scales for waste bins and containers.

Results are streamed to the cloud and can be viewed in real-time from any computer or mobile device, providing access to better understand how a building performs over time.

RESET Waste is currently under development. To learn more the RESET Waste Standard, click below to download the RESET Waste Introduction Deck.

1. What is the RESET Waste Standard?

The RESET Waste Standard is a data-driven standard for evaluating the building performance as it pertains to waste and recyclables by standardizing the continuous monitoring requirements of waste generation in built environments.

RESET Waste takes into consideration aspects including monitor capabilities and design, deployment, and installation requirements, as well as data reporting and data platform requirements.

RESET Waste's fundamental approach to data requirements can be divided into 3 parts:

Completeness

RESET Waste standardizes the continuous monitoring requirements of the waste generated and collected in built environments. Continuous monitoring helps projects track and understand the lifecycle input and output of waste, including when, where, and how much is generated.

The completeness of data verifies whether or not all the data is there and whether there is enough data to understand the state of waste generation.

Quality

RESET is first and foremost a standard for data quality. Performance results are only as good as the data being assessed.

RESET addresses data quality at the source and specifies requirements for the monitors and the deployment methodology in a project. RESET also makes sure the data is trusted and relevant by requiring monitors to be installed in the right way and to have plans for long term maintenance. Lastly, RESET sets requirements for how the data is reported and connected to guarantee transparency and access via analysis and reporting.

The quality of data verifies that the data is true and reflects the actual situation.

Performance

RESET Waste is performance-based, but does not set any performance targets.

Instead, RESET Waste will leverage the RESET Leaderboard, where projects will be benchmarked anonymously against each other with the goal of highlighting projects that excel so other projects can learn more about the solutions and services they leverage.

The RESET Waste Standard is available for free. It is a great reference for any project that wants to set up continuous monitoring for waste.

Projects leveraging the RESET Waste Standard can opt-in to becoming a RESET Waste Project, where it can become RESET Accredited. Click here to read more information on project accreditation.

2. The Intent of RESET Waste

Continuous monitoring makes waste generation metrics actionable and helps projects optimize decision making for sustainability and waste reduction.

The intent of the RESET Waste Standard is:

  • Promote the continuous monitoring of waste generation in the built environment.
  • Standardize how waste generation is measured in order to facilitate the benchmarking of projects.
  • Advocate awareness and transparency around waste life cycles by reporting the data to project occupants to foster education and understanding of where waste is generated for opportunities to improve upon baseline metrics.
  • Raise public awareness of waste generation and the impact it has on the environment.
  • Gamify the data to create incentives for lowering waste generation.

3. How to Use the RESET Waste Standard

With a focus on the collecting of data via continuous monitoring, the RESET Waste Standard can be easily applied to either new or existing buildings.

The RESET Waste Standard is applicable to two different project typologies, Commercial Interiors and Core & Shell, which have been separated to help tenants, operators, and owners achieve healthy performance targets by clearly defining and communicating their respective roles and responsibilities.

RESET Waste for Commercial Interiors

RESET Waste for Commercial Interiors (CI) is a performance-based standard targeting the waste generation in interior spaces. It monitors, tracks, and communicates the waste generated by the occupants of an interior space.

RESET Waste for Core & Shell

RESET Waste for Core & Shell (CS) is a performance-based standard targeting the waste generation of public spaces and tracks the flow of waste in the central waste management systems in a building. It monitors, tracks, and communicates the waste process and lifecycle of the building spaces and systems that are managed by the building operator.

4. Project Accreditation

On top of the RESET Waste Standard, a project can pursue RESET Waste Project Accreditation, which provides additional measures of trust via third party audits.

In order for a project to achieve RESET Waste Project Accreditation, waste generation, as tracked through continuous monitoring and calculated into a daily average, must be maintained.

Note that there is no RESET Waste Project Certification because there will not be hard performance targets to hit for certification. Instead, RESET Waste Projects that are accredited will be added into the RESET Leaderboard for anonymous benchmarking.

RESET Waste Project Accreditation is a great way to market the actions being taken by a built environment towards sustainability and waste reduction.

5. Next Steps

RESET Waste is currently in development, with plans to release the draft and enter peer review and piloting phases in 2021. Target date for official release will be in 2022.
